New Medicare Cards are Being Issued

September 14, 2018

Medicare is in the process of issuing new Medicare cards to all Medicare recipients.  These cards will have unique Medicare ID numbers instead of Social Security Numbers to protect you from identity theft.

Your card will automatically be mailed to your address on file. If you need to change your address, please visit My Social Security Account.

Do not give your Social Security number or Medicare ID to anyone that contacts you directly and without permission. Please do not give this number to anyone else, including anyone who identifies themselves as calling from Medicare. If someone calls you and identifies themselves as Medicare, hang up, and contact Medicare directly at 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227)

SGIA will only contact you after you have initially contacted them directly or they have a partnership with your employer. Your employer will inform you of this relationship to assist with your Medicare choices. SGIA will need your Medicare ID to securely enroll you in a Medicare plan.

As cards are being mailed out over a period of time, you can track the status of your card on Medicare's website, by visiting  Medicare New Card Status

To learn more about ways to protect yourself from identity theft, please visit The Federal Trade Commission
